1
Day One

Arrive in Zurich

Zurich

Welcome to winter Switzerland. Your driver meets you at Zürich Airport (ZRH) and transfers you to the Old Town. The Bahnhofstrasse is illuminated with the ‘Lucy’ Christmas light installation (November–January) — 70,000 LED crystals suspended above the boulevard.

Afternoon: Zurich Christmas market at the Hauptbahnhof (the main station, one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe) or the Sechseläutenplatz market on the lakefront. Glühwein (mulled wine) and raclette at the stalls. Welcome dinner.

Day Two

Zurich → Lucerne

Lucerne

Morning: train to Lucerne (45 minutes). Lucerne in winter is a snow-dusted postcard — the Chapel Bridge with fresh snow on the wooden roof, the Lion Monument framed by bare trees, and the lake reflecting the grey-white sky.

Afternoon: Lucerne Christmas market in the Franciscan Church square. The Old Town’s painted façades look their best against fresh snow. Optional: Swiss Chocolate Adventure at the Swiss Museum of Transport. Evening: fondue dinner by the lakeside.

Day Three

Lucerne Winter Day

Lucerne

Morning: Mt Pilatus in winter — the cable car from Kriens to the summit (2,132m). The cogwheel railway closes in winter but the aerial cableway operates year-round. Snow-covered summit with views over the frozen landscape. Optional: tobogganing at the summit or snowshoeing.

Afternoon: Lake Lucerne winter steamer cruise (the historic paddle steamers run a reduced winter schedule — your specialist confirms availability). The lake in winter has a quieter, more atmospheric quality. Evening at leisure.

Day Four

Lucerne → Interlaken

Interlaken

Morning: train from Lucerne to Interlaken via the Brünig Pass (approximately 2 hours). The Bernese Oberland in winter — snow-covered peaks, frozen waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley, and the Jungfrau massif white against the blue sky.

Afternoon: Interlaken winter village. Lauterbrunnen in winter — the frozen Staubbach Falls and the valley walls dusted with snow. Optional: ice skating at the Höhematte park in front of the Jungfrau. Check in. Evening: Interlaken fondue or raclette dinner.

Day Five

Jungfraujoch — Winter Summit

Interlaken

Full day: Jungfraujoch Top of Europe (3,454m) — the experience is arguably more dramatic in winter. The cogwheel train climbs through the Eiger to the summit where the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding peaks are fully snow-covered. The Sphinx observation terrace at minus 10 to minus 20 degrees with 360-degree white panorama.

Return to Interlaken. Optional: half-day skiing at Grindelwald-First or the Jungfrau ski region (Grindelwald, Wengen, Mürren — your specialist arranges lift passes and equipment rental). Evening at leisure.

Day Six

Interlaken → Bern

Bern

Morning: train from Interlaken to Bern (approximately 50 minutes). Bern is Switzerland’s capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a medieval Old Town on a peninsula loop of the Aare river, with 3.7 miles of covered arcades (Lauben) that make it perfect for winter walking.

Afternoon: guided walking tour — the Zytglogge (astronomical clock tower, chiming figures at 56 minutes past every hour), the Federal Palace (seat of the Swiss government), the Bern Minster (climb the tower for the winter panorama), the Bear Park, and the Kramgasse (the street where Einstein lived when he published the theory of relativity). Bern Christmas market if visiting in December. Evening: dinner in the arcaded Old Town.

Day Seven

Bern → Montreux → Geneva

Geneva

Morning: train from Bern to Montreux (approximately 1.5 hours). Château de Chillon — the medieval castle on Lake Geneva, atmospheric in winter with fewer crowds and mist rising off the lake. Montreux Christmas market (the Montré Noël, one of Switzerland’s most celebrated, running along the lakefront with the Alps as backdrop, late November–late December).

Afternoon: train from Montreux to Geneva (approximately 70 minutes along the lakeshore). Geneva in winter — the Jet d’Eau (140m fountain, operates year-round), the Old Town (St. Pierre Cathedral), and the Bains des Pâquis (the public baths — steaming outdoor pools on the lake in winter). Check in. Farewell dinner.

Day Eight

Depart Geneva

Geneva

A final Swiss winter morning. Optional: the Palais des Nations (UN) or the CERN visitor center. Transfer to Geneva Airport (GVA) for your departure flight.

Eight days of Swiss winter — Christmas markets under the lights, the Jungfraujoch at 11,332 feet in full snow, Bern’s medieval arcades, and fondue by every fireplace. Your specialist remains reachable throughout. Safe travels home.

The people who will design your Switzerland trip

You work directly with a specialist who knows Switzerland deeply — not a call center or booking agent. Every consultation is with someone who has been there, knows which Glacier Express seat has the Matterhorn view on the right side, which Lucerne hotel has the Chapel Bridge visible from the breakfast terrace, and which Zermatt restaurant has the fondue that justifies the car-free village walk.

Questions

About this itinerary

December through March for snow. Late November through late December is Christmas market season — Zurich, Lucerne, Bern, and Montreux all have exceptional markets. January through March is peak ski season with the most reliable snow. The Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat operate year-round and are spectacular in winter when the peaks are fully snow-covered. Your specialist adjusts the itinerary around Christmas markets, skiing, or a mix of both depending on your travel dates.

Not at all. This itinerary is designed for winter atmosphere — snow-covered cities, Christmas markets, mountain railways in winter conditions, fondue by the fire — not as a dedicated ski trip. Skiing is available as an optional day in Interlaken (Grindelwald-First or Jungfrau ski region) but the itinerary works beautifully without it. If you want a ski-focused trip, your specialist can build a dedicated ski itinerary centered on Zermatt, Verbier, or St Moritz.

The summer itinerary focuses on Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt — the alpine triangle with hiking and mountain excursions. This winter version replaces Zermatt with Bern (UNESCO Old Town, winter markets) and adds Montreux and Geneva for the Lake Geneva segment. The reason is that winter in Switzerland rewards the cities as much as the mountains — Christmas markets, fondue culture, and snow-covered medieval architecture are the winter experience. Both itineraries share Lucerne, Interlaken, and the Jungfraujoch.

Yes — the Jungfraujoch, Mt Pilatus, and most major mountain railways operate year-round. Some smaller cable cars and hiking-oriented gondolas may have reduced winter schedules or close for maintenance in November. The Glacier Express runs year-round and is arguably more dramatic in winter with snow-covered landscapes. Your specialist confirms all mountain excursion schedules for your specific travel dates before booking.
