1
Day One

Arrive in Lisbon

Lisbon

Welcome to Lisbon. Your private driver meets you at Lisbon Airport (LIS) and transfers you into the city — typically to a hotel in Chiado (the most central neighborhood), Alfama (the oldest district, atmospheric Moorish-era lanes below the castle), or Príncipe Real (quieter, tree-lined, favored by locals). The transfer is about 20 minutes.

Afternoon at leisure. Lisbon is built on seven hills with light that reflects off the Tagus estuary in a way that is genuinely unlike any other European capital. A first walk through Baixa Pombalina — the grid of elegant 18th-century streets rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake — and a pastél de nata at Manteigaria sets the tone. Your specialist has the welcome dinner reservation ready at a restaurant with a terrace view across the rooftops.

Day Two

Lisbon City Day

Lisbon

A full day exploring the capital. Morning: Alfama — the oldest neighborhood, a labyrinth of narrow lanes, tiled facades, and the Castelo de São Jorge at the top with panoramic views across the Tagus. Your specialist has arranged a private walking tour covering the castle, the Miradouro da Graça and Miradouro das Portas do Sol viewpoints, and the Sé Cathedral (Lisbon’s oldest church, built 1147 on the site of a former mosque).

Afternoon: Belém — the neighborhood at the mouth of the Tagus where the Portuguese Age of Discovery launched. The Jerónimos Monastery (UNESCO, Manueline Gothic, Vasco da Gama’s tomb), the Belém Tower, and the Padrão dos Descobrimentos monument are all within walking distance. A pastéis de Belém at the original 1837 bakery is non-negotiable. Evening: LX Factory (a creative complex in a converted textile mill) or a fado performance in Mouraria, the neighborhood where the genre was born. Your specialist has the fado reservation at a casa de fado where the performers are genuine — not the tourist-trap dinner-show variety.

Day Three

Sintra Day Trip

Sintra · Cabo da Roca

A private-driver day trip to Sintra — 40 minutes from Lisbon, a UNESCO Cultural Landscape of fairy-tale palaces and forested hillsides that Byron called ‘glorious Eden.’ Your specialist has pre-booked timed entry to Pena Palace (the technicolour Romanticist hilltop palace, built 1842, best reached by the 8:30am first entry to beat the coach tours) and Quinta da Regaleira (the Gothic-revival estate with the famous Initiation Well — a 89-foot inverted tower spiraling down into the earth).

Afternoon options: Monserrate Palace (a lesser-visited Romantic-era jewel with Moorish-Gothic architecture and subtropical gardens), the Moorish Castle ruins on the adjacent hilltop, or a drive to Cabo da Roca — the westernmost point of continental Europe, a clifftop lighthouse with the Atlantic stretching to the horizon. Return to Lisbon by early evening for a final dinner. Your specialist has the closing reservation ready.

Day Four

Depart Lisbon

Lisbon Airport

A final Lisbon breakfast, then your private driver transfers you to Lisbon Airport (LIS) — about 20 minutes from the city center. Most Lisbon city-stay guests leave already planning the return — typically to add Porto and the Douro Valley, the Algarve coast, or the full Portugal Uncovered route that covers the country from south to north.

Your Juniper specialist remains reachable throughout departure day, and your in-app itinerary stays accessible for any last-minute questions. Safe travels home.

Your Top Travel Specialists

The people who will design your Portugal trip

You work directly with a specialist who knows Portugal deeply — not a call center or booking agent. Every consultation is with someone who has been there, knows which Alfama fado house is worth the steep walk, which Douro Valley quinta pours the wines they don’t export, and which Algarve grotto boat runs the early-morning tour before the midday crowds arrive.

Taryn Harrison — Portugal, Ireland, Scotland & Iceland Travel Specialist

Taryn Harrison

Juniper Tours’ most tenured specialist with 25 years of experience. CMSC certified and a former Peace Corps volunteer. Taryn brings the same detail-orientation to Portugal that she’s known for across Ireland and Iceland — she knows which Lisbon neighborhood hotel has the best terrace view, which Sintra entry time avoids the coach-tour peaks, and which Douro Valley quinta pours the reserve that doesn’t appear on the standard tasting menu.

Questions

About this itinerary

Yes, for a focused city introduction. Four days covers Alfama, Belem, the Sintra day trip, and a fado evening — enough to experience Lisbon’s essential character without the density feeling compressed. Travelers who want more typically extend to 5 or 6 days to add Cascais and the Estoril coast, a Setubal or Arrabida day trip, or simply a slower pace with more restaurant time. Your specialist can also pair the 4-day Lisbon stay with our Porto & the Douro Valley itinerary for a 10-day Portugal combination.

The three strongest neighborhoods are Chiado (the most central, between Bairro Alto and Baixa, walking distance to everything), Alfama (the oldest district, atmospheric but hilly, best for travelers who want to live inside the historic texture), and Principe Real (quieter, tree-lined, the neighborhood Lisboetas actually frequent). Your specialist picks the hotel based on your pace preference and style — boutique conversions in Alfama are romantic but involve steep lanes; Chiado is flatter and more convenient for restaurants and evening walking.

March through June and September through November are ideal — warm, clear, and the city is at comfortable capacity. July and August are hot (often above 35 degrees C) and the Sintra palaces are at peak coach-tour density. Winter (December through February) is mild by European standards and the cheapest window — Lisbon rarely drops below 10 degrees C and the indoor attractions (museums, fado houses, restaurants) are at their best when the weather encourages lingering. Christmas and New Year in Lisbon is increasingly popular and books early.

Yes — this is the most common extension path. Adding Porto and the Douro Valley (our 6-day Porto & the Douro Valley itinerary) creates a 10-day Portugal combination. Adding the Algarve (2-3 days, Lagos and Benagil) plus Porto creates something close to our 9-day Portugal Uncovered flagship. Your specialist can build both options and show you the trade-off. The Lisbon-to-Porto connection is either a domestic flight (1 hour) or a scenic drive via Coimbra or the Alentejo interior.
