One of Europe’s most rewarding countries — and still genuinely undervisited.
Portugal earns the superlatives it gets — remarkable food, exceptional wine, centuries of Atlantic history, and a warmth in the people that makes every city feel like a small town. The country moves at a pace that rewards travelers who give it time.
Lisbon is the entry point, but it’s not the whole story. The hilltop palaces of Sintra are thirty minutes away. Porto — one of the most charismatic riverside cities in Europe — is three hours north. The Douro Valley beyond it is among the most visually extraordinary wine regions on earth. Taryn Harrison and Lexi Blade design Portugal itineraries that go well beyond the surface.
Lisbon, Sintra & the Atlantic Coast
Lisbon’s hilltop neighborhoods, the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra thirty minutes away, and the Atlantic coast village of Cascais — Portugal’s capital region alone could fill a week done properly.
Castle Stays & Boutique Hotels
Porto is one of Europe’s most charismatic riverside cities, and the Douro Valley beyond it is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards. Together they represent the best two-day extension in Western Europe.
Food, Wine & Fado
Portuguese cuisine is one of Europe’s most underrated — outstanding seafood, Michelin-starred restaurants without the Paris price tag, and Fado performances in intimate Lisbon venues that stay with you for years.
Great European travel is an investment. Most clients spend $5,000–$15,000 per person for a complete custom Portugal itinerary — trips start at $2,500 and your specialist will walk through exactly what that looks like for yours.

Portugal Uncovered — 9 Days
Lisbon · Sintra · Coimbra · Porto · Douro Valley

Many clients love an itinerary very similar to this one — if something here resonates, your specialist can build something just like it (or better) specifically for your travel style, dates, and group.
1
Welcome to Lisbon
Lisbon
+
Arrive in Lisbon — a city where history, music, and tradition shape daily life in ways that are immediately perceptible. A private transfer delivers you to your hotel, and the rest of the day is yours: a relaxed introduction to Portugal’s capital at your own pace. Lisbon is best arrived into slowly. Walk toward the river, find a pastelaria, and let the city begin on its own terms.
Overnight: Lisbon
2
Lisbon Through Taste & Song
Alfama · Bairro Alto
+
Discover Lisbon’s extraordinary culinary heritage through a guided food experience — petiscos, fresh seafood, pastéis de nata, and local wine in the city’s most authentic neighborhoods. The evening is spent immersed in Fado — Portugal’s iconic music of longing and storytelling, performed in an intimate venue where the music fills the room. Fado in Lisbon is one of the great live music experiences in Europe and deserves an entire evening given over to it.
Overnight: Lisbon
3
Sintra & the Atlantic Coast
Sintra · Cascais
+
Thirty minutes west of Lisbon, the town of Sintra rises from forested hills above the Atlantic — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of romantic palaces and terraced gardens that inspired Byron and became the playground of Portuguese royalty for centuries. The Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, and the Quinta da Regaleira are extraordinary in their different ways. Continue along the Estoril coast toward Cascais, where dramatic sea cliffs meet the Atlantic. Return to Lisbon in the late afternoon.
Overnight: Lisbon
4
Journey to Coimbra
Coimbra
+
Depart Lisbon and travel inland to Coimbra — Portugal’s historic university city on the banks of the Mondego River, home to one of the oldest universities in the world and a tradition of Fado quite distinct from Lisbon’s. Check into a tranquil riverside retreat and ease into a quieter, more intimate pace. Coimbra moves on a different rhythm from the capital and arriving with the afternoon free allows the city to reveal itself naturally.
Overnight: Coimbra
5
Legends of Coimbra
University · Medieval Streets
+
Explore Coimbra’s storied past — from its medieval streets rising steeply from the river to the Joanina Library at the University of Coimbra, one of the most beautiful Baroque libraries in the world. The university, founded in 1290, has shaped Portuguese intellectual and cultural life for over seven centuries. The afternoon is free to wander the old town, explore the Santa Cruz Monastery, or simply relax by the Mondego. Coimbra rewards unhurried exploration.
Overnight: Coimbra
6
North to Porto
Porto
+
Continue north to Porto — Portugal’s second city, and for many visitors the one that stays with them longest. The Ribeira waterfront, the azulejo-tiled facades, the bridges over the Douro, and the wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia visible across the river: Porto announces itself all at once. Settle into your hotel and spend the afternoon exploring at your own pace. Porto rewards wandering and has an extraordinary restaurant scene.
Overnight: Porto
7
Porto & Port Wine Heritage
Ribeira · Vila Nova de Gaia
+
A full day discovering Porto from its best vantage points — the Clérigos Tower views over the rooftops, the azulejo interior of São Bento station, the Livraria Lello bookshop, and the Ribeira waterfront. Cross the Dom Luís Bridge to Vila Nova de Gaia for a visit to a renowned Port wine cellar — the centuries-old lodges where Port ages in long wooden barrels are an experience unto themselves, and the tasting that follows is genuinely educational.
Overnight: Porto
8
Douro Valley
Terraced Vineyards · River Cruise
+
Spend a full day in the breathtaking Douro Valley — one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world and one of the most visually extraordinary landscapes in Europe. Terraced vineyards drop steeply to the river on both banks; traditional rabelo boats navigate the valley; and the quintas that line the hillsides have been producing Port and still wines for centuries. The day features scenic river cruising, estate hospitality, and wine country landscapes best appreciated at a genuinely leisurely pace.
Overnight: Porto
9
Departure from Porto
Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport
+
A final Portuguese breakfast, then a private transfer to Porto Airport for your return flight. Most travelers leave Portugal with a deeper appreciation for the country than they arrived with — its cuisine, its wine culture, its music, and the warmth of its people leave a strong impression. Your Juniper specialist remains reachable throughout departure day, and your in-app itinerary stays accessible wherever you need it next.

Portugal travel questions
Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are ideal. Temperatures are warm without being extreme, crowds are manageable, and the countryside is at its most beautiful. July and August bring peak summer heat and higher prices. The Douro Valley harvest season in September–October is one of the most atmospheric times to visit Portugal.
Most Juniper Portugal itineraries run 8–12 days. Eight days gives you Lisbon, Sintra, and Porto with a day in the Douro Valley. Ten to twelve days allows you to add Coimbra, the Algarve, or the Alentejo wine region without rushing. Portugal is more spread out than it looks on a map, and the drives between regions are part of the experience.
Portugal is one of Europe’s most underrated honeymoon destinations — and increasingly popular among Juniper clients. Lisbon’s intimate hilltop neighborhoods, the Douro Valley’s quinta estates, the Algarve’s cliff-backed coves, and the extraordinary quality of Portuguese food and wine create a deeply romantic atmosphere. Taryn Harrison and Lexi Blade design Portugal honeymoons regularly and know exactly which properties deliver.
The Douro Valley is Portugal’s premier wine region — a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of terraced vineyards carved into steep schist hillsides along the Douro River. It produces Port wine as well as increasingly celebrated still wines. A proper Douro Valley visit includes a river cruise, a quinta wine estate lunch, and ideally one night in the valley itself. Juniper specialists design Douro itineraries that go well beyond the standard day trip from Porto.
Lisbon and Porto are the two essential cities — each with a completely different character. Lisbon is a historic capital with hilltop neighborhoods, Fado music, and Atlantic-facing culture. Porto is a compact, charismatic riverside city with the best food scene in the country. Between them, Coimbra makes a natural stop. Sintra and Cascais are natural day trips from Lisbon. The Douro Valley is a full-day or overnight excursion from Porto.
